I give up

I have 2 macs on 0sx 1015 with the network update. They are connected
via an ethernet hub. The cabling is fine as both macs will network when
both in os9

But they wont when in x... apple talk on either machine just beachballs
then stops without finding anything. Using ip address results in 'no
file servers running' message. (after about 5 mins)Sometimes each
machine will 'see' itself but not the other

it cant be this difficult surely? I have file sharing turned on and all
relevant (i think) folders set to allow read and write.

is there a url to go to that takes me through this step by step? Im on a
28.8 modem for the moment (dont ask), paying by the damn minute so I
cant spend any more time trying to find a solution on applesite
