Any old IDE CD-RW or DVD-ROM/CD-RW will work.

Quite often the FirmWare that's required to boot a PC
CD-ROM;CD-RW;DVD-ROM/CD-RW; etc. will also work with the Mac. But, booting
is a [minor] hit-and-miss proposition if you don't do your research
before-hand.

Take a gander at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com for their "Drives Database".
People enter reports about whether or not particular
drives/CD-ROMs/CD-RWs/DVD-RWs/etc. work. (which reminds me, I should do
that).

I recently picked up a Sony CRX175A1 (OEM) 24/10/40 for ~$50 US ($75 CDN)
and it works beautifully (fast & quiet) -- Apple's software recognises it
and Toast 5.x does too.

It took me *longer* to find a screwdriver in this place (you'd think a
scientific lab would have a toolbox, wouldn't you ;) than it did to replace
the drive (instructions available at xlr8's web site) (5-10 minutes).

What I did was to ask the sales guy to look at the web site before I bought
the drive -- reports were fine for this particular model so I took it & he
was happy to have a sale.

Eric.
