OS X is inherently more stable, but will be slower than 9, tho how
that translates to your mother's experience is subjective. 9 should
be relatively stable tho. I could oft times go for several days to a
couple of weeks without a crash, and most of those were related to MS
products, IE and Word. I had lots of extensions too. If you keep the
system clean without too many extensions added on, and avoid MS you
could probably do better than I did. But OS X just doesn't really
crash.

Classic is like an extension that runs in the background and opens up
and runs Classic apps (most but not all). It is like a program in
that it doesn't load in as part of the system, but only opens when
you need to open a classic application.

Nisus says:

=========== begin

*Nisus Writer 4.1.6 is not compatible with Mac OS 9.1 and above if
you are connected to an AppleTalk or TCP/IP network, or if AppleTalk
is turned on by default on your Mac (AppleTalk is on by default on
every Macintosh). If you are not connected to a network and AppleTalk
is on, the workaround is to make AppleTalk inactive.

If you need to be connected to an AppleTalk or TCP/IP network, you
will need to download the latest version of Nisus Writer.

=============== end

And the current version, 6.5, is said to be a fully compatible
Classic app. Nisus for X is planned without any announced release
date.

The onboard SCSI works just fine. I have a 9 gig SCSI hooked up on
mine, and my beige is beefed up with a firewire/usb card and a lot of
other stuff, including a G4. I bought this one new tho, about 6 years
ago.
