I use a ram disk on my laptop because it will allow me to save it to the hard drive before restarting. I don't use it on my desktop machine because it won't allow me to do that. However, I do think it works pretty well. You DO need to tell your browser to use it as the place to store your cache.
Also, unless you are allowing other people to connect to your computer, turn off all file sharing. It will also make a big difference in the speed of your computer.
