Here's an answer to my own question, based on some web searching and common sense. I just disconnect any other usb items when uploading pictures. Seems to work.
Actually, the camera will not work through a hub, so the camera cable lives permanently in one of the two usb ports. The hub is attached to the other. I can just disconnect the power to the hub to make the camera go solo. It's a workaround.
