I've found that I can directly burn hfs disk images made by Disk Copy
(under OS 9.2, I don't have X yet) using cdrecord under Linux.
Cdrecord runs under MacOS X, too, and the price is right--free, GPL.
I've only tried burning read-only uncompressed images made by using
the 'create image from folder' in Disk Copy 6.3.3 I copy them to
Linux box, then just burn them. Works great.

(a very marginally related thought:
I've been thinking about trying Darwin before splurging on OS X, but
HURD's been in the queue so much longer that it's gotta come first.)
