OK I'll give you some info that might be of some damn use ;)

I have a 300MHz iBook that is currently running OS X 10.1.5 very happily
(Jaguar hasn't arrived yet - GGRRRRR!@!!$!$@!@) and contently. I have a
few suggestions that will make it easier on you and the iBook. The first
is to have a bigger hard disk installed by an Approved Dealer or Apple
Service Center. The second is that you can fit a RAM SODIMM under the
Airport card (which itself is under the keyboard) on the iBook to boost
the RAM. Mine has 288MB RAM and seems perfectly happy with running OS X.

OS X 10.1.5 and later have full 2D acceleration support for the ATi Rage
Mobility (a laptop version of the Rage Pro) chipset that powers the
graphics on the iBook. This dramatically improved the speed of the desktop
and of Quicktime playback in OS X. The 4MB of VRAM might be considered a
little restrictive but it's not too bad as long as you are not into any
heathen pursuits like playing games or watching DivX movies.

If I were you I'd go that bit further, if you can afford it, and get
either a 366Mhz with FireWire or a 466Mhz SE with FireWire. They have 10GB
hard disks, plenty big enough for OS X and some apps, and FireWire which
means you can attach another external drive when you can afford one, or a
DV camera for portable DVing.

Suffice to say my iBook, although it has a 10GB hard disk, is as original
as they come, made in early 1999. I love it to death, the only thing that
has ever gone wrong with it was tht the wires broke on the power cable
just where the cable goes into the plug for the iBook. I know how to
remedy that, using old plug parts, HS Tube and super glue, though if you
are really worried about it.
