It has been known for more than a year that IBM wanted to use the die real 
estate which Altivec consumes for other mission-critical purposes.

The PPC architecture is IBM's, and Apple is dependent upon it for their core 
technology.

IBM doesn't need Altivec for its mission-specific functions, Apple does.

Hence, Apple will obtain its PPC chips from Motorola.
