I'm about to try the same kind of install. I have a Beige Desktop 233 and
would like to install a second HD, Maxtor 100 GB as slave to a replacement
TDK 48x CD.

Cool!

Anything under 137 GB will be OK. The Beige G3 doesn't support 48-bit LBA,
therefore it can't support drives which require this addressing mode.

Stay in the 120 GB class (IBM 120GXP and Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 120, e.g.)
and you'll be OK.

I'm told I need an upper bay sled which I purchased. How was your install?
... and did you use a sled for the upper or lower bay (where Zip drive would
have gone)?
>>

Be VERY careful in your selection of trays.

The lower (Zip) tray is part number 815-1688, and installs from the front.
The tray in my Beige G3 DT is a Rev. B.

The upper (second HD) tray is part number 815-0446, and installs from the
rear. The tray in my Beige G3 DT is a Rev. C.

You will also need four (4) 6-32 UNC x 5/16" machine screws. 5/16" screws are
very hard to come by. 3/8" screws are too long for most drives, and 1/4"
screws are occasionally too short. If you can't get 5/16" screws, get 1/4"
screws. DO NOT make the mistake of trying to use M3-0.5 screws.

Oh, and BTW, I thought Rev. "A" didn't support slaves? I have Rev "B" I
think because I my G3 came with RagePro.
>>

Rev. A doesn't support Slaves; Revs. B and C do.

The Rev. A ROM-SIMM goes with a Rev. 1 mobo; the Rev. B ROM-SIMM goes with a
Rev. 2 mobo; the Rev. C ROM-SIMM goes with a Rev. 3 mobo.

It is OK to use a Rev. B or C ROM SIMM in a Rev. 1 mobo, but Apple never made
any this way.

You have a Rev. B ROM-SIMM because your /233 has a Rev. 2 mobo, not
specifically because of the Rage Pro chip.

A Rev. 1 mobo has a Rage II+ chip; a Rev. 2 mobo has a Rage Pro chip; a Rev.
3 mobo has a Rage Pro Turbo chip on some (I call these Rev. 3b) and a Rage
Pro chip on others (I call these Rev. 3a).

In re: the EIDE cable issue, you will need a special cable which replaces
your current Bus 0 (basic HD) cable with one which supports both lower and
upper HDs.

I have these custom made.

Contact me off-List for availability and price of these cables.
