I would leave it on. Set it to 1 + amount of real MB in 
your machine (in your case 385).

There are a couple of advantages to this. Memory mapping 
is one. With memory mapping, shared libraries are loaded 
only once. With VM turned off shared libraries are 
loaded for each application that uses the library (so 
that shared library might get loaded several times 
wasting memory). If you do a Get Info on an Application 
it will tell you how much more memory you'd save/need if 
you have VM turned on/off.

Another benefit of memory mapping is application memory 
doesn't have to be contiguous. The app can be fragmented 
in memory, which means you dont need a contiguous block 
of memory to run an APP. 

Yes there is a performance hit with VM, but VM has 
improved so much since the SE that Ram Doubler is no 
longer competitive with it (hence they stopped selling 
it, right?). You only see a real performance hit if you 
get close to using the MAX amount of memory in your 
system.

However, with a 640MB in my machine, I rarely turn VM on 
anymore since I never even get close to using it all up.
