How much RAM does that 17" iMac have in? If it's less than 512MB that 
could be your answer. The bus is only 100MHz and the hard disk is only 
ATA66 so swapping around RAM<->HD is pretty twardy (not much faster 
than it is on my G3/400 in fact). If it still has only the stock 256MB 
RAM then get a RAM upgrade (preferably anothre 512MB). THAT will kick 
it up the pants without a doubt.
