If it's less than 512MB that could be your answer. The bus is only 100MHz and the hard disk is only ATA66 so swapping around RAM<->HD is pretty twardy (not much faster than it is on my G3/400 in fact). If it still has only the stock 256MB RAM then get a RAM upgrade (preferably anothre 512MB).
