first, try a drive on the other connector, it may have simply unplugged
part way and not made contact on all pins.  have you replaced the cable?
 if so, i believe the g3 machines are ata 66, and need a cable rated for
that or a higher speed.  also, you have to use the connector meant for
the logic board to connect to the logic board or there can be problems. 
it is possible for the connector itself to work loose from the cable
since they are crimped on and then held on by a plastic bar that snaps
into place, if the bar is loose or broken it's easy to pull the cable
out of the connector just enough to cause problems without it being
obvious until you look closely, there should be no space between the
cable and connector especially on the side that faces the socket pins.
