Amdahl doesn't get a mention on the chart -- the author says he's only listed about 10% of Unix distributions. >> Interesting facts in re: Solaris. Sun couldn't get it's multiprocessor servers to work worth a sh*t. Amdahl's UTS ... sorry for the "brain fart" re: A/UX ... already supported multiprocessing, and had supported 16 processors in a System/370-System/390 environment for several years. Amdahl was a Sun remarketer. Amdahl licensed to Sun Amdahl's proprietary multiprocessor extensions to Unix. I believe "A-Plus" was the name of this licensed product. Sun paid for a number of A-Plus licenses, and then abruptly canceled them. Shortly thereafter, Sun came out with its own multiprocessor support, obviously cloned from Amdahl's proprietary A-Plus code. When Fujitsu and Hitachi pulled this kind of sh*t on IBM, IBM hit them both with a half-billion-dollar settlement, and both Fujitsu and Hitachi paid up. Well, Fujitsu paid three timed over, as it just couldn't keep its hands out of the cookie jar. No such luck in the Amdahl/Sun situation, as Amdahl apparently needed Sun's remarketing agreement more than it needed a settlement from an A-Plus copyright infringement lawsuit. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
