actually, unlike pc systems, the mac os is fairly tolerant of mixing
extension from different systems.  i still have an imagewriter (because
it's cheap to run, and i have it) under os 9.1, which doesn't have a
local talk driver for it, so i use one from os 8.6, no problems at all.
