because the firmware is defective and apple hasn't posted a fix yet.  you can reset 
it.  when you
restart on your way to os x, hold cmd-o-f (i think that's it, it might be cmd-opt-o-f) 
to boot into
open firmware, type reset-all <return> and then mac-boot <return> and it should go 
back to normal. 
it's definitely a defect, hopefully the next firmware release will fix it.
