I'm upgrading my blue G3, as many of you can tell from the posts I've been making recently about CDRW drives. Now I want to get into some other stuff, namely hard drives and graphics cards.
Just a quick question - will the ATA controller in the G3 work seamlessly with an 80 GB Western Digital hard drive? Also, what is a fair price for a Radeon PCI card? I've heard of both the Radeon 7000 and just the regular Radeon, and the regular one is supposedly faster. How much of a difference is there, performance wise and price wise? Finally, I've made a list of CDRW drives that appear to be fully compatible with the blue G3: Samsung SW-240 (40x12x40x, requires hacking iTunes) Plextor PX-W4012TA (40x12x40x) Plextor PX-W4012A (40x12x40x, requires new Authoring Support extension) Teac CD-W540E (40x12x48x) Sony CRX195E1 (40x10x48x, requires hacking for iTunes, untested in OS 9) So some of them have the issues listed above, but all of them will at least burn with Toast and boot from an OS X CD. That's all I really need, although booting from an OS 9 CD would also be nice because OS 9 is still a nice OS and I still use it once in a while. Oh, one last thing I noticed... there appear to be two Plextor drives that are nearly identical, a PX-W4012TA and a PX-W4012A. I think one of the reports was from a guy in England, so perhaps they are the same except they are sold in different places. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
