Please forgive the length of this message, but I want to give as much
info as possible to see if anyone can help with this problem.

In August, I was out of town for almost two weeks. When I got back from
my trip, I turned on my Beige G3 266 MT, OS 9.1. The dialog box appeared
that said there was a system error and to restart with extensions turned
off. After several more attempts to start up, I had to boot from the
system CD. I ran Disk First Aid and TechTools Pro and neither detected a
problem. I chose my hard drive as the startup disk and rebooted. I
rebuilt the desktop and everything ran fine until recently. BTW, my G3
is a little over 4 years old and is used for internet, word processing,
scanning images and PhotoShop. Also, all of my data is already backed
up.

I was out of town for 8 days and got back last week. I tried to boot up
my G3 and got the dialog box saying there was a system error - address
error. I tried rebooting with extensions off and it took over 45 minutes
for the computer to boot up. When I tried to open a folder it would take
5-10 minutes before the folder would open.

I ran Disk First Aid and got the message, "Unable to read from disk". I
restarted the computer and this time the flashing question mark
appeared. This time I rebooted from the TechTools CD and ran the
diagnostics. The Surface Scan test showed a problem and and I selected
to repair it. this is the message I received from the TechTools scan:

"TechTool found one or more bad blocks on your media during the surface
scan test. These locations have been mapped out so that your computer
does not attempt to use these locations in the future. Left uncorrected
these bad blocks could cause unreliable drive performance as well as
data loss."

Also, when it tested volume structures, I got this message:

"TechTools was unable to rebuild the directory on the selected volume.
You can use the options on "File Recovery" panel to recover files from
the volume."

Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is? I can now only start up
the computer with a bootable CD.
