Two problems that flow on from each other. First, I need to create a bootable copy of Norton Systemworks with an OS9.1 System. Symantec, in their infinite wisdom, have released SystemWorks v2.0 with a 9.2 System that won't mount with older Macs. They somewhat glibly instruct owners of said older Macs to....
1. Set up an alternate boot disk, using your Apple System software utility. (whatever that is?) 2. Start up the computer from that boot disk. 3. Insert the Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh CD and run Norton SystemWorks. which assumes a lot of things, like the buyer has multiple external drives or a CD burner. Which is not the case in my client's instance. Attempting to burn a bootable 9.1 CD from Toast Ti v5 under OSX.2 is a good way of making beer mats. Even when the system folder is being copied direct from the original OS9 install CD to the burning CD (Mac OS, not Extended) the blessing on the folder disappears, taking bootablity with it. Back to the drawing board.... OK, boot from OS9.2 and run Toast from there. Sure enough, the blessing on the System folder is retained, all is cool, just run the Speed test to be sure....CRASH! Slow down....12x....8x....4x....2x....1x CRASH each time. OK, we'll set up a Temporary Partition so the copy is direct from hard disk to CD and just for sure run Norton Disk Doc and Speed Disk Optimiser over the partition.... Sorry, same thing... RIGHT! Lets really get tough here, create a massive RAM Disk and tell Toast to use that as it's cache. The Speed Test is flying through, oodles of spare capacity, then the progress bar stalls.... and CRASH! Repeat; ....more of the same. Different stall point each time, but something on that partition causes Toast to stop in it's tracks and linger long enough that even a 1x speed burn times out. Funny, it doesn't happen when the burn is in OSX.... As a last resort I'm going to try burning the Norton files in X and an blessed System folder in a separate OS9 session. But I would really like to know what is happening here. I'm having similar problems burning CDs of simple documents. All goes great until some file, somewhere, stalls the burn. Unfortunately the Toast Speed Test only flags what volume is being copied, not the actual files.
