I have to say initially I wasn't *that* impressed. It doesn't seem much faster. Then I enabled Quartz Extreme in 10.2 and WHOA!! (in my best Keanu Reeves voice) Everything has become fluid, Quicktime playback is superlative. I am running at 1280x1024@Millions on my B&W G3/400 and I have to say I am very impressed. HOWERVER, and this is a big but (no not a big butt - I'm sitting on that ;) ) there are two things of which you should be aware. 1 - I have a B&W G3 and thus a 66MHz PCI slot for video and 2 - You need 10.2, obviously, to get Quartz Extreme. That noted it is an excellent card for OS X 10.2. I fear it might not be as impressive on the Old World machines that have 33MHz PCI only. Of course, as I have already detailed, QE has it's own caveats, one is the DVD playback (which is one of the things the Radeon 7000 PCI is VERY good at) takes a whipping if it's turned on. On my B&W this makes it drop a frame every 10 minutes but on Beige G3s this could meant totally unwatchable DVD playback. The other is that Games performance drops due to the fact that OS X leaves the GUI running on a background layer during full screen gaming so it is essentially doing 2 intensive tasks at once when running 3D OpenGL or Rave based games. I only got a knock of 6fps in Quake 3 and even less in UT but I only run at 800x600@32-bit (feeble processor) to keep things fluid. -- Mark Benson AIM - SilValleyPirate Visit FlatPackMacs online: <http://fpm.gotdns.com> "Never send a human to do a machine's job." -The Matrix -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
