have you been charging it very often, i.e. when it's not been used much? some
batteries (all to some extent) can develop memory and effectively lose some of their
capacity if recharged after little or no use often. the cure is to run it dead flat
and then fully recharge several times, that usually works. the refrigerator trick
probably works by making the battery overcharge a bit and possibly also disturbs the
"memory" to some extent (i've never seen a good explanation of why "memory" happens,
and i've read some tech literature from battery makers that say it happens, but not
how or why..). most batteries (nearly all) require a lower voltage to charge when
cold, so depending on how the charger is designed a cold battery can overcharge, while
a hot battery won't charge properly. in any case, the refrigerator certainly won't do
damage if only done occasionally. i would stay away from the freezer, you're sure to
get condensation in a freezer!

The most comprehensive study of laws permitting individuals to carry concealed weapons
indicates that these laws reduce murder rates by about 10 percent, with similar
declines in other violent crimes.
