Kerry,
I just boosted my memory to 768MB (bought 2 new 256MB RAM sticks from
1800Memory). The memory came from the US and you'll find that getting the
same prices up here in Canuck land is hard to come by. Even with the
shipping, and the conversion rate and the extra costs from some brokerage
house saying I owe them for CDN taxes and duties, I still ended up saving a
cool $70 CDN. Go to http://www.ramseeker.com to find the latest prices for
RAM for the B&W. Remember it can't take just any type of PC100 SDRAM. The
B&Ws need a special type for the 256MB that has chips on both sides of the
stick. They're pretty cheap in the US. The cheapest here for the same type
was about $130CDN, where as in the US I got it for $26US each.
If you have a Rev.A/Rev.1 mobo then you'll probably need to invest in an
ATA controller card. The built-in ATA controller in the Rev.A mobos for the
B&W tend to be on the flaky side of things when it comes to faster and
larger drives. I kept getting weird system bus errors when I went to a 30GB
drive but all that went away once I got an ATA card. Sonnet, SIIG,
Ultratek, and ACARD all make ATA controller cards for the Mac. Make sure if
you get one to check that it's for a Mac.
Check out http://www.macwarehouse.com for external floppy drives, as well as
http://www.CPUsed.com in Toronto. Though Futureshop usually only carries PC
stuff, some of it are actually made to run on either PC or Mac. Also check
out http://www.compusmart.com and best buy.
Hope this helps.
