As long as you are running OS 8.6 or later on the
beige G3, almost *any* ATA CD-ROM will work. Apple's
later CD/DVD driver is just about universal. 

I have also found that just about any drive will be
bootable as well. The only one that I have tried that
wasn't bootable was a AGI 56x CD-ROM. The others that
I have used successfully (in chronological order)

* Apple ROM 24x (OEM)
* Kenwood 52x True-X (Sweet drive, quiet & fast! NLA)
* Creative 48x (not good with OS 10.x, dunno why)
* Sony 24x10x40 CD-RW (also a nice drive)
* Kenwood 52x True-X (Bought another off of eBay)
