Well, as an old Unix hand I recommend even more partitioning than that ;-)

I have three partitons on my system: System, Classic and Users.

System holds System Apps etc.

Classic if for OS9, classic Applications, etc.

Users is /Users linked to another partiton (though I'd prefer it to be 
another drive entirely.)

This lets me re-install the system with minimal hassles, like backing up 
and restoring user data, even when the system is massively hosed, 
requiring a re-install of the OS on a clean disk. I can reformat the 
system partition and not lose any data.

Apparently OSX does something with /Sawp, sinc ethat also normally goes 
on it's own partition in most Unix installations.
