Games are probably not that important to backup (you can re-install them from CD), but if I have to format I always back up the save games usually in a 'Save' folder in the game folder or even a level deeper in teh agem folder, and the prefs. If you do remember which version you have installed (like an update) so that you won't have compatability problems between save games/prefs and the app version.
