Economics; CDs are so cheap in this fragile format. When CDROMs first came out the drives had a caddy you would place the disk in. If you were really careful you'd buy a bunch of caddies and never take your treasured disks out. You're right that you can't leave them around the house loose, especially if your have kids. Local kids have piles of VCDs and they quickly become scratched and unusable. If you want a more durable medium, MO disks are much more sturdy, and have solid plastic case, like a Zip disk but much more reliable. A 640MB one, about the capacity of a CDR, is about $5 though, over 20 times the cost of a blank CDR. The drives also cost a lot more. Every CD burning app will have a function to duplicate disks by saving to an intermediate image file on your hard disk. (Or just leave the image files on your hard disk if you have a few dozen gig to spare.) It's an excellent idea to do so (using brand-name media) exactly as we used to for floppies. And as with floppies, some companies make life hard by trying to copy protect their CDROMs, but you can generally find a way to dupe them if you look in the right places. CDs though will keep if you treat them like cut glass and not a plastic tumbler. Hold them by the edges only and never leave them out of their box except to put in a drive. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
