Tina, have you tried Vuescan.  It is inexpensive shareware and highly regarded
by scanning professionals.  It supports most scanners.  Ed Hamrick, the
developer, answers emails quickly.  You could download the software and try it
before spending the money.  It takes a while to learn but it's not bad once you
get it, and allows lots of options dedicated software usually doesn't.
