Yes, HFS+ is the same as Mac OS Extended.

No, unless you stick with HFS+. This is the difference between HFS and HFS+,
the minimum size of each file. For HFS it is 4k (ever wonder why all alias'
where 4k?) while with HFS+ it is 1k. There are programs out there that will
allow you to make the minimum size even smaller. We recently bought/used
PlusMaker to take a 27gig drive from HFS to HFS+ without having to back up
everything and wiping out the hard drive (although it is recommended that
you back up first. We gambled and one!).

My suggestion: format all Mac drives HFS+. I just noticed that on Toast
Titanium you can burn a CD in HFS+ format, which wasn't the case before?
