That happened to me on my Mac G3 400 MHz, rev. 1. My FireWire in my Mac 
was dead and I found out also that this a common problem on rev. 1 Mac 
G3. There were 163 posts about bad FireWire in the Apple forum. Chances 
are you don't have this model G3 but it could be your FireWire card. 
OTOH sometimes rebuilding the desktop solves missing items. If you go 
this route, you might try trashing the finder prefs, Mac OS prefs and 
system prefs if you are working in OS 9. Or are you using X? Good luck.
