I guess the Atto is a dual channel card, though it only has one internal and
one external
connector.

Quite true, and being a dual channel card, you will notice that it has a PCI
bridge function, and neither of the two independent on-card SCSI controllers
will be visible to ASP through that PCI bridge.

This can cause some problems, but nothing more than the usual SCSI voodoo is
required to sort things out.

I have two of these UL2D cards, but I am presently using the original
Apple/ATTO single channel cards in my "production" Macs.

Can I solder on the extra connectors, since there are solder pads for the
extra internal and external connectors?

The card is supplied with one standard 68-pin internal connector (Channel 1;
will become Bus 1 on Beiges and Bus 2 on most earlier PCI Macs) and one very
nonstandard 68-pin external connector (Channel 2; will become Bus 2 on Beiges
and Bus 3 on most earlier PCI Macs).

The pads are there for an additional 68-pin connector for an internal
connection for Channel 2, and pads for an additional 68-pin connector for an
external connection for Channel 1.

I have added the second 68-pin internal connector on both of my UL2Ds. I used
Honda branded connectors, but this connector type is pretty much
standardized, and others should be OK as well.

Is either more compatible or better performing than the other?

I strongly suspect the UL2D is superior to the Adaptec.
