sounds like what you're into now is theatrical lighting  per-say.

IMHO there aren't too many Mac's in the biz, mac users  maybe   but a
majority of lighting consoles are PC based.  There are ,however, some
interfaces for pd/dimmers that are written for mac's. I did a gig during
Xmas that had a "living xmas tree" with a couple hundred thousand
twink-lights  and the dimmer/power distro was controlled by a new iMac. But
HOG's, ETC's, and ScanCommanders (lighting consoles/dimmer controllers) are
all PC based (VPC may be an option), if no one here is an LD or into the
theatrical/production lighting arena  then you may find more info in lines
of exactly what you need  in a theatrical lighting forum.  There should also
be a few mac users in the forum since it is largely an art-based arena.
