The problem may simply be that the file has the wrong type/creator codes
set -- use FileTyper or a similar utility to change it (same as a native
Word file).

If that fails, if you simply want to get at the text in a hurry, open the
file with BBedit (the lite version is free). You should see some binary
crap at the beginning and end with plain text in the middle -- but it can
get messy if the file has been heavily revised and "quick saved" which just
adds new text and hides the old.
