Hi, all.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas, and all the best to everyone for 2003
from the UK.

Got a weird problem. Just obtained an iMac DV SE (G3 400MHz, 256Mb RAM,
12Gb drive etc.) from a relative. They had attempted to install 10.1, and
the Mac booted into 10.1 ok. However, when attempting to use System
Preferences to change the startup to OS9 there was nothing showing in the
window. I started from the original (8.6) CD, re-initialised the drive ,
installed 8.6 and subsequently upgraded the OS to 9.1. Screen set (from
Control Strip) to 1024 x 768.

At no time was I asked for any firmware updates, but now the weird behaviour
starts. If I restart from the pull-down menu, the Mac starts with no red on
the screen - screen overall bluish etc. There is a shimmering line down the
left of the screen, distorted icons - barrel distortion present. I've only
ever seen this before when someone's tried to use an unsupported refresh
rate.

If the iMac is actually shut down and then started from "Off", everything's
OK. If it's put to sleep, and woken up, everything's fine, too. But
restart from the pull-down menu, and the display is all weird.

Does any guru out there have any idea what's going on?

Thanx,

Ted Treen
