Is this a multi-res or a fixed-res monitor?...many of the older monitors
support only one or two resolutions, and in addition have a fairly large
masked/unused area on the tube that you may not be able to adjust.
This is true of monitors made specifically for Macs, not just VGA.
Speaking from experience.

I've bought used Apple Multi-Res (or whatever they're officially called) 20"
Trinitron monitors locally (in the middle of nowhere) for $80-$100. No setup
hassles, and they work with Apple OS and video cards, doing everything you
need to do to adjust and calibrate.
