G'day from Oz, Donald

LimeWire's not dangerous. just bloody hopeless. The underlying LimeWire
engine has problems, such as disappearing queued & partial downloads,
'Could not move to Folder' errors, and to top it all off, the LimeWire
interface often corrupts it's 'Downloads.dat' files (where downloads
info is stored).

The LimeWire team are copping bad press for failing to address these
ongoing problems, and are not answering forum questions.

A better alternative, but more expensive, is 'Acquisition' (at US$15).
It uses the LimeWire engine, but works around SOME of the problems. It
also allows more hosts, so you get more hits per item. It, however, is
very actively supported, and is constantly being improved. Easier
interface too. Consider though that LimeWire Pro costs US$10 per 6
months, and 'Acquisition' is good value.

I tried a 97 Meg file (easily hittable) for 5 days with LimeWire, and
found how to nurse it past some of the problems (14 damn 'Could not
move to Library' messages, and once that happens you CANNOT restart in
the middle of the download without losing it) , but it still crapped
itself 95 meg into the process.

I put in Acquisition, found many more hits, and downloaded it without a
hitch (though I had to be there to hit the 'Unregistered' window every
45 minutes). It was at least 20% faster as well.

You might get the 'Cannot move' message, but a restart pops the
downloads back up. It's an engine bug.

I've paid up.

Another one is 'Drumbeat', but it's more expensive, does not yet
support resumed downloads, nor the Gnuttella network (so not much mac
stuff). Huge PC network though, great for mp3s. often in the Petabytes
and tens of millions of files of info, even on my modem. I've had over
40 hosts at one time. Watch this one closely. 15 day trail.

Regards

Santa
