That happened to me, too, when I tried to initialize a 2.5 GB Maxtor IDE
drive in my new (to me) G3 desktop. It was among some items pulled from an
abandoned Compaq Pentium I found once, that I thought might be useful for
a beige (why aren't they called platinum?) G3...as well as a 64 MB PC100
SDRAM stick (it works! -- the only thing that does, so far).
Drive Setup will see this Maxtor hd & start to intitialize it, but the
initialization always fails -- it's prob. hosed. When I took it out & put
the original 4 GB Western Digital, giving up (so far) on the Maxtor, the
same message appeared at startup, until I wiped the hd & re-intalled a
system. Since then it has not bothered me, but I haven't tried the Maxtor
again yet.
I also have an Intel ethernet card (model 667280-003). Their site has only
PC drivers, but I don't really need it, as the G3 has 10base built-in, & a
USR Sportster PCI modem card (model 00084005), which also seems to only
have PC drivers. I was hoping maybe I could use it, as the G3 apparently
doesn't support a Geoport "modem", but I guess PCI modems are a pretty
iffy thing on the Mac...probably a Winmodem anyway....
