I had a USR 56K external that was doing that very same thing. I fixed it by
replacing it with another one. Do you sometimes get messages like; "The
modem is not responding properly" and "The server is not responding
properly"? See if you find a loaner to try in place of the Best Data 56K.
That would be the easiest way to prove or rule out a hardware problem.
