I had always thought that that it was illegal, but I
bought a special a couple of weeks ago on an
illustrator upgrade and there was no mention of it
being academic, nor was any kind of indication on the
box?

I phoned Adobe and they said it wasn't supposed to be
done, but go ahead and register it anyway?

My main concern is what happens when you want to
upgrade? What then?
