This is a curious one that someone on the list may have encountered. Any
suggestions would be much appreciated.

Configuration: 266 MHz Power Mac G3 Beige Desktop, 64 MB RAM, the original
internal 4 GB hard drive, 1GB external backup drive connected to SCSI port.
Running Mac OS 9.04

Background Leading to Problem: This system has been fault free for its
entire life and very solid with OS 9.04 for the past two years. The backup
hard drive had originally been formatted with six partitions to reduce the
block size. It was converted to HFS+ and I used Drive Setup to reformat the
backup drive into a single partition. This seemed to work properly. However,
when I rebooted, my machine hung as described below.

Problem Symptoms: After powering on the computer, the smiling Mac icon
appears and everything then freezes. There is no way out except to do a hard
power off using the button on front of the cabinet.

Troubleshooting Remedies Attempted:
1) I booted the machine from the OS 9.04 CD and tested both hard drives
using Disk First Aid and Drive Setup Test Disk. Everything checked out fine.
2) I verified that both hard drives had the latest 9.04 driver installed.
3) I did a Clean Installation of OS 9.04 on the 4 GB hard drive.
4) I reset the PRAM.
5) I disconnected the SCSI cable from SCSI port to ensure that it wasn't
some SCSI related anomaly.

In all cases the smiling Mac freeze symptom was the same.

I then did Clean Installation of OS 9.04 on the backup drive and made this
the default for start up. No problem. The machine boots fine, albeit
somewhat slower.

If I then make the 4 GB drive the default for start up, I get the same
smiling Mac freeze symptom.

Any futher ideas?
