Has anyone with the SONNET TANGO Combo USB/FireWire PCI Card as well as
other "Brands" of USB/FireWire PCI Combo Cards had any "compatibility"
problems with peripheral devices and applications running on a Beige G3
MiniTowers.

First, here is my G3 machine:

Beige G3 MiniTower (orig. had 266MHz ZIF)

OWC/IBM Copper Mercury G3 / 500MHz ZIF
768MB / SDRAM (also OWC)
80GB Western Digital HD / 8MB Buffer / 7200RPM (Start-up Drive)
40GB Quantum Fireball HD / 2MB Buffer / 7200RPM (Slave to CD-RW)
Internal Sony CD-RW CRX215E1 (48x24x48)
Apple Internal Floppy Super Drive
Apple/Iomega 100MB ZIP Drive
ATI MAC EDITION 32MB PCI Video Card
SONNET Tango USB/FireWire Combo PCI Card
Apple 10/100 Ethernet PCI Card
Apple A / V "Wings" Card with modem
Apple/GV Internal COMM Slot II Modem
4MB VRAM Upgrade
New PRAM/Clock Battery
OWC/Mercury External (Sanyo) CD-RW FireWire Drive
System Software: Apple OS v9.2.2

I have the following problems with the Sonnet Tango USB/FireWire PCI CARD:

Causing "freezing-up" or "hanging-up" of the mouse (both the Std. Apple
Mouse or Wireless Logitech Mouse...doesn't matter which) and anyone of a
number of software applications. These freezing-ups last for 15 to 20
seconds before being freed-up and then the G3 returns to a normal operating
mode. It also hangs-up regularly during printing from AppleWorks or Word
(Im using an HP 970Cxi printer) and neverever had a problem with this
printer before I adding the Combo Card.

Sometimes the entire system will completely freeze-up and then my only
option is to either "force-quit" or push the main "power-off" front panel
button and unfortunately start all over againvery frustrating! I have
called & E-mailed Sonnet Tech Support for help and they eventually even sent
me a replacement Combo Card but it is acting the same way! Could this mean
that Beige G3's just are not compatible with this type of card (COMBOs)?

SONNET TECH Support then suggested that I do a complete "clean install" of
the Apple OS; and still the same odd system responses and slow peripheral
device responsiveness! I just dont get it? Im a pretty good
troubleshooter but this has really stumped me.

One interesting note is that when I take out the SONNET COMBO card and
replace it with an individual USB card and an individual FireWire card the
G3 MT runs beautifully! The obvious problem with using two separate PCI
cards is I then have to lose either the Apple 10/100 Ethernet Card or the
ATI MAC Edition Video Card. I really want to find a way to make this Combo
Card function correctly (or for that matter, any other workable COMBO card)
and preserve the other PCI slots for expansion purposes.

Does anyone know if there is a "combo-card-gremlin" running around in these
Beige G3s that causes them to hate Combo Cards and the Peripheral Devices
connected to them?

At this point I would appreciate any comments and suggestions from any of
the Beige G3 users out there and what you have to say on this issue
especially anyone who has had the same or similar problem with any brand or
model of USB/FireWire PCI Combo Card.

Regards,
