Reply: You're right - highly annoying and it's easy to let the lag build over time. Most of the bulk (that has to be re-written to disk each time you quit) is in your folders (see at Finder) measured in MB's while other housekeeping files, even Bookmarks, are K's. To cut lag, suggest you delete selected messages, then Empty Trash - from within the app - rather than at finder level. This allows you to manage which messages you want to preserve.
