I immensely enjoyed the Low End Mac reviews this week of the G3-G4 PowerMac series and their value, since I really want to leave these old PCI PowerMacs of mine in the dust for something a little newer. I was leaning towards a B&W myself, but then I saw AGP G4 motherboards for just $150 on dealmac and got to thinking...
If I plan to invest $300+ as it is in 800Mhz worth of speed (G3 and G4 upgrades both cost about the same at this speed), and I already have all the peripherals and plenty of cheap PC RAM, wouldn't it be better for me to hunt for a G4 AGP bare rather than a B&W system? For the same processor upgrade expense, I get a G4 at equivalent speed, plus more options like AGP video. Is it possible this could be done for less than what either a non-bare Yikes or B&W would cost? Is *this* my best buy instead? I have ATAPI CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives, a good-sized ATA/100 hard drive, and plenty of PC-100 SDRAM from a quickly-aging PC. Aside from the bare system, the AGP Mac video card would be the only other thing I'd have to buy. What do you think? Is this a realistic option for someone who is looking for the cheapest way into a PowerMac he can get? Is it possible to find such a bare G4 PowerMac? --Chris iBook 700 OS X.2.4 PM 7500/200 OS 8.6 PM 4400/200 OS 8.6, NetBSD -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
