Then you were sadly misinformed. There's no reason you would have 
needed to reformat the machine to get rid of Bugbear. Re-install 
windows, perhaps, with it's attendant dance of re-installing all your 
programs, but your data files should have been ok.

That said, you ended up with the better solution :-)
