I took the drive out of an ext. Sony (firewire) CDRW last year and put both
a DVD/CDRW(Toshiba) and a 40gb ata HD (IBM/MAC) and both functioned well (
the 40gb was formatted in a Giga G4 and had 20gb's data already on it).

so I know that you can at least use one in  a Sony case.
