Betcha anything your L2 cache is disabled. It is disabled duriong 
install, which is why the install takes forever on these systems.

Go download either L2CacheConfig 
<http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/framework.cfm?page=L2CacheConfig.html> 
or PowerLogix Cache Control X 
<http://www.powerlogix.com/downloads/index.html#cache> and get yourself 
running instead of oozing along.

I have a similar setup and it's quite usable.
