Many thanks to all who advised me on my recent HD queries. I have now flashed my Apple F&W SCSI card to ATTO, and updated its firmware. I have also unlinked my 80Gb Seagate (ATA IV drive) from the CD, and recabled it as master on the other ATA bus on the MoBo.
The setup is ATTO card ,<>18Gb IBM DNES-318350W (ID 1) <>4.5Gb IBM DDRS-34560W (ID 0) Booting into 9.2.2 on the 18Gb drive. A couple of things surprised me when benchmarking all drives with ATTO ExpressPro tools: Seagate ST380021A Sust'd read 11.98MB/s Sust'd write 12.76 MB/s IBM DDRS-34560W Sust'd read 10.06MB/s Sust'd write 10.52 MB/s IBM DNES-318350W Sust'd read 34.10MB/s Sust'd write 28.30 MB/s This shows the ATA Seagate is faster than the 4.5Gb F&W SCSI drive, which really surprises me as they're all 7200rpm drives. Does anyone know if this is normal, or have I got something wrong? (see following) As originally fitted, the 4.5Gb drive has jumpers set to:- (Position 5) Enable auto Spin up, (Position 6) Enable SCSI Terminator (being at end of cable) (Position 7) Disable Unit Attention The 18Gb drive has jumpers set to:- (Position 4) For SCSI ID (Position 5) Enable auto Spin up, I have not installed a jumper on position 7 to disable Unit Attention Inhibit as the pdf from IBM suggests it doesn't really matter either way, and it seems to work OK. Should I have this jumper set the same on both drives, or if I remove it from the 4.5Gb drive, so enabling UAI control, will this speed up the throughput of the 4.5Gb to something more like the 18Gb's performance? I do intend to seek another 18Gb (thanks, eBay) when Bank Manager & Wife permit, but if Kyle or any other HD guru out there knows if it's inherently down to the different models, I'd be v. grateful if they would shed light on my darkness.
