IIRC, the click of death had to do with the read/write head coming loose (or at least partially so). Whether this was caused by vibrations (poor mounting), warped disks, or improper insertion of disks wasn't really clear. The loose head, however, would damage the disk which in turn could cause the r/w head of another drive to come loose (thus the statements made by some that the COD is contagious).
