Some install CDs are Mac specific, ie the one that came with the eMac. I have OS X running on a Beige 266, 300, and 400. They run fine, more RAM and upgraded video give a HUGE boost. 10.2 sped up my Beige hardware a lot. I am also running OS X v.10.2.6 on a Pismo and a G4 733 for comparison sake. With upgraded video my Beige G3 400 runs OS X v.10.2 Server as fast as my G3 400 PowerBook.

I just bought my wife a 1gHZ G4 with all the trimmings, my first experience with OSX. I still use my G3 (510) 266mHZ. Should I (can I) install the OSX software on my G3? The G4 (emac) install disk can't be read by the G3, my first hint that perhaps it's not a match-up Mac intended. I can live with 9.2.2 easily enough, but for networking and other reasons, I'd prefer that both macs use similar systems. (Right now, I can't even figure out how to get the two machines to talk over an ethernet crossover cable.) As well, OSX on the G4 lets me use our 120 gig LaCie external firewire drive as a boot drive, whereas 9.2.2 on the G3 does not. I'd like to know if installing OSX on the G3 would let me boot from the external drive. Any advice would be much appreciated.
