Seriously though, if resetting the password when booting from the CD and other things don't work it might be time to re-install*. It isn't like OS 9 where you can easily go in and sometimes get it to work by replacing a few bad pieces. On the other hand if you do an archive-and-install you'll keep all of your network settings. Problem is, you'll also keep your user acct and it's settings, which seem hosed. Try this first anyway, a re install can fix the weirdest things.

*You might also first try running Disk First Aid when booted off the CD and repairing permissions. You might also try booting in single-user mode for some repair work:
