We installed a WD 40 GB Hard Drive 7200 rpm.. sometime back.. I believe it is a ATA 100.. How can I check for the ATA 66 configuration?
As I recall the B&W models don't even have ATA-66 native on the motherboard.
That's just it --- Macs didn't come with IDE controllers on the motherboard as fast as ATA-66 until the Sawtooth G4 models. B & W Macs are I suppose only ATA-33.
You can easily ATA-66, or an ATA-100 or ATA-133 PCI card. Know that the new hard drive you now have is faster than the old, and that you're a large part of the way there already as far as maximizing normal HD speed. But a faster ATA controller should still help some. Most of what's available now is ATA-100 or ATA-133, but even an older ATA-66 controller will help.
This is because today's IDE hard drives, which are all sold as either ATA-100 or ATA-133, can't even come close to saturating that kind of bus. It's a little like saying you have "digital speakers" in that you can connect your 40-year-old hifi speakers to a modern stereo that has a CD player --- doesn't mean a whole lot.
