Are you saying you have a dead chip?
I (now) saying I'm not 100% sure. See, at the time i was simultaneously working with the new video card and the USB card that is unhappy being there now. The ZIF "worked" to the extent it would boot and run fine. It was only during shutdown or sometimes restart (which I believe means RAM is OK) that it or something would corrupt the boot partition.
In my tests whenever I substituted the ZIF with another that the problem went away.
However, last night, with my known-good 266MHz ZIF in place, I moved the ATA-66 card to another slot in hopes that the funky USB card might feel better in another slot. Booted up, and there was the corruption again. It hasn't returned, but now I'm wondering if upon boot something happens somehow to corrupt the boot partition. This would reverse my theory and mean the corruption has been happening when booted and MountCheck sees it and runs DFA.
At this point I'm almost ready to Carbon Copy Clone everything onto another HD again for backup and try the faster "broken" ZIF without the ATA-66 card in place.
If successful I might then just live with the slower HD performance to gain the extra CPU speed and full 1MB of L2.
What speed have you actually gotten it to run at?
Ok, Chris, your question:
In the beige G3 my 350MHz/1MB (pulled from a B&W) would run all day at 433MHz; in the 7500 it was like 413 maximum.
Don't forget you have the option of fiddling with more than just CPU speed when chipping here. You can modify the bus to run at 70,75 or 83MHz and the PCI bus to run at 30,33 or 35MHz. With my stock 266 ZIF I can do a max of 300MHz or if I push it to 83MHz bus the ZIF can do 291MHz. I always leave the PCI bus at 33MHz to minimize effects with the cards.
And I guess a better question I should ask is, would a processor
fan be detrimental in any way to the performance and reliability of my Mac?
Don't see how it could --- you aren't going to freeze anything in there. Less heat should always be better than more heat, I'd say. But would a fan make a positive difference? Can't say; all I know is that a stock or chipped 350 probably doesn't ever need one. Someone else here might know. Now, if you had a G4 all bets are off.
